RCMP in Chilliwack rescued a man stuck in the Fraser River on July 28 near Old Orchard Road and Arnold Road. 

Around 8:30 a.m., members of the Chilliwack RCMP, Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service (LMD IPDS) and the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment Indigenous Policing Services (UFVRD IPS) all responded to the scene. 

Police said that when they arrived, they found a man stuck in fast-moving water who was unable to make it to shore on his own. 

The LMD IPDS used a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) to get a personal flotation device to the man, said police.

UFVRD IPS said they sent officers in a jet boat across the river, who pulled the man out of the water and into the boat. 

“It was a successful and positive outcome to a risky and complex situation. The Fraser River has strong currents, cold waters, shallow gravel bars, and log jams that can create several hazards for people who fall into the river, as well as for their rescuers,” said Cst. Marc Verreault, UFVRD IPS jet boat operator.

The man was checked out by paramedics once he arrived on shore and was cleared by BC Emergency Health Services.
