The incident, which occurred on July 31, led to stiff fines for the driver, with the truck being taken out of service and impounded.
A BC Highway Patrol officer caught a fully loaded transport truck flying by at 109 km/h in a 60 km/h construction zone on the Coquihalla Highway at Highway 97C near Merritt, B.C. RCMP said in a news release issued Monday.
Despite the officer turning on the lights and sirens on his police vehicle, the truck continued to speed through the construction zone and only stopped once clear of the area.
The officer, who suspected mechanical troubles were at play, performed an inspection on the spot. The tractor and trailer both failed after several problems were found.
The driver, identified only as a 53-year-old Calgary man, was fined about $1,400 in total for excessive speeding; problems with brakes, tires and marker lights; compliance issues with inspections and record keeping; and seven days of impound fees. The man’s employer, a company based in Surrey, B.C., is responsible for paying the cost of towing and impound, according to RCMP.
After cars being carried on the trailer were unloaded, the tractor and trailer were taken away and impounded for safety violations.
“There’s an expectation that commercial truck drivers will be as committed to road safety as anyone else, and police are committed to upholding that standard,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
The driver had been previously cited for routine traffic violations, McLaughlin added.
