Fire crews say a resident was injured while trying to rescue their family pets from a massive house fire in North Vancouver Sunday morning.

District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services was called to the century-old home on East Osborne Road around 5:30 a.m., Asst. Fire Chief Ryan Stewart tells CityNews.

“The first arriving fire crew reported heavy fire conditions with the primary residence fully engulfed in flames,” Stewart said.

The blaze spread to an adjacent home, he says.

“As crews worked to contain the fire, radiant heat and direct flame exposure caused a neighbouring residence on the east side of the original fire building to ignite,” he said.

“Fire breached the first-floor kitchen window and an upper-floor bathroom window, allowing extension into the attic space. The fire subsequently spread throughout the attic and burned through portions of the roof structure.”

All occupants were able to evacuate, he says. The resident who was injured was taken to hospital for treatment.

Another resident, who did not wish to be identified, said the outcome could have been much worse. This person says they only had moments to escape, with nothing but the clothes on their back.

It isn’t clear how many residents have been displaced.

Stewart says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
