After several Abbotsford residents noticed a man walking around on a roof carrying what looked to be a rifle on Tuesday, they did the right thing: they called 911.

However, the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says, in this particular case, there was no immediate threat to public safety because the man in question was just doing pest control.

Police say they were called to the apartment building, located on Whatcom Road, south of Mountain Drive, shortly before 6 p.m.

“Given the nature of the call, more than 16 officers from across the city responded immediately to ensure public safety,” AbbyPD said.

Officers contained the area and detained the man, who was cooperative throughout the investigation, without incident, police say.

“Police subsequently determined that the man was an employee of a pest control company conducting bird control work using an air rifle,” police said.

“While notices had been posted within the apartment building to inform residents of the activity, no notification had been provided to neighbouring businesses, residents, or members of the public in the surrounding area.”

AbbyPD thanks those who reported the incident for their quick action.

“After observing an individual carrying what appeared to be a firearm, they promptly called 911 and allowed police to assess the situation,” it said.

“Timely reporting enables officers to respond quickly, evaluate potential risks, and take appropriate action to help keep our community safe.”
