A police operation in Salmo earlier this week resulted in a suspect being shot by an RCMP officer, prompting an investigation by British Columbia’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has been notified and is now investigating the incident, which occurred while officers were executing a search warrant on Sept. 3.

According to BC RCMP, members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) were assisting Creston RCMP with the execution of a search warrant at a property on Ski Hill Road at approximately 10:11 a.m.

Police said officers located a man on the property and informed him he was under arrest. However, the man entered a travel trailer instead of complying with police directions.

RCMP said officers used multiple de-escalation measures in an attempt to persuade the man to leave the trailer, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

In information provided to the IIO, RCMP stated that an officer later observed the man standing at the entrance of the trailer holding what appeared to be a weapon.

Police said the officer discharged their gun at the suspect.

The man then went back into the trailer and remained inside for nearly an hour before eventually exiting and being taken into custody.

According to RCMP, officers provided medical care to the man before he was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The RCMP notified the IIO following the incident, and the area has been secured as the investigation continues.
