In what the Burnaby RCMP is calling “modern-day grave robbing,” a theft targeting hundreds of gravesites is causing concern in the city.
At least 200 bronze vases, used to hold flowers for deceased loved ones, have been reported stolen from two Burnaby cemeteries.
So far, the reports have been from Ocean View and Forest Lawn cemeteries, but Cpl. Mike Kalanj doubts it’s limited to only two graveyards.

“If I were a betting man, I’d say it’s happening all over the Lower Mainland,” he said.
The vases cost families upwards of $1,000 to buy. Melted down or sold, though, their value isn’t nearly as high. Denny Ferreira with Dignity Memorial says it’s still enough money for some.
“A thief grabs five of these, they’re worth $20 each, $100, that’s a quick fix,” Ferreira said.

While metal theft isn’t new to police, Kalanj says these robberies are on a different level.
Ferreira agrees.
“Total disrespect. No dignity or morals,” Ferreira said.

“I always felt that cemeteries or churches are two places you don’t mess with.”
The consequences for stealing these vases include charges of theft over $5,000, mischief, and any other charge the Burnaby RCMP can convince the Crown to go with.
Security has been increased at the targeted cemeteries, and Kalanj has one thing to say to the thieves.
“If you’re suspicious of people around you, it might be one of us following you,” he said.
Mounties have set up a specific tip line where you can call or email investigators with any information about these thefts.
