2 men charged after fatal 2022 Maple Ridge shooting

Two men are now facing charges related to a deadly shooting in Maple Ridge four years ago.

On Aug. 12, 2022, the Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to reports of a shooting on 119 Avenue near 216 Street, where officers found a 33-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim, later identified as Cory William Thomas, died at the scene.

At the time, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said it believed the shooting was targeted, connected to local drug trade, but not related to gang conflict.

In an update Monday, IHIT says investigators arrested one man late last month and another man last week.

A 26-year-old suspect was arrested on March 27. The next day, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) charged him with one count of breaking and entering, and one count of manslaughter with a firearm.

On Friday, the BCPS charged a 27-year-old suspect with one count of breaking and entering, one count of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, and one count of second-degree murder. He was arrested the next day.

Sgt. Freda Fong says the charges reflect years of investigators’ hard work.

“Murder is the most serious offence, which is why every step in the investigation must be informed, measured, and conducted with the utmost care,” said Fong.

Records show the 26-year-old is not currently in custody, but is expected back in court on April 22.

IHIT says the 27-year-old suspect is “in custody until his next court appearance.”
