The gray SUV exploded outside residences just after 5 a.m. Sunday morning in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood.

The car fire was near 62 Avenue and 150 A Street in a cul-de-sac.

The fire was caught on many home CCTV systems.

Surrey Fire Services (SFS) and Surrey Police Services frontline officers were on scene shortly after the fire started.

No injuries or arrests have been reported and the cause is unknown.

1130 NewsRadio reporter, Aastha Pandey-Kanaan was nearby when the explosion happened.

“We heard a bang sound and we all just woke up in the neighbourhood and then I ran down to see what was going on. Turns out a car was on fire, it just was up in flames.”

“The flames of the car have been put out. There’s just a lot of smoke. The police are still on scene.”

Assistant Chief of Operations, Mike McNamara, said the vehicle was fully engulfed with flames when crews arrived on scene.

“[We] applied water and fought the car fire. Standard practice. Knocked the fire down and then police responded to the incident and took over the scene from there.”

The fire completely destroyed the car, McNamara stated it is a total loss.

“We don’t have a cause and with a typical vehicle fire, unless the police want us to do an investigation, we won’t. but they may have an idea of what’s happened here,” said McNamara.

There is no indication that this incident is related to extortions or other criminal activity. The investigation is in the early stages. There should not be any major traffic disruptions. 

CCTV footage obtained by 1130 NewsRadio appears to show a person pouring liquid over the vehicle before flames can be seen.
