This replaces the current representation of being a single electoral area director.
“Last year, residents in Okanagan Falls voted to become a municipality, a significant step toward shaping the future of their community, including the services they rely on and the decisions that affect their daily lives,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
“This is an important milestone for the community. Our government is committed to supporting a smooth and successful transition to local governance.”
The incorporation of the District of Okanagan Falls marks the first instance in 16 years in B.C.
The area of Okanagan Falls includes lands that are significant to the Osoyoos Indian Band, who the province has worked closely with during the process of incorporation.
Part of the incorporation process is setting up how governments work together. This includes local governments relationships with First Nations.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen and the Osoyoos Indian Band helped layout the approach to incorporation, considering the area’s history.
There has been a set up of a way for a reconciliation collaboration agreement, three advisory bodies to support the decision making for services for the area such as transportation and water.
The new municipality will officially incorporate on Nov. 6, which is the first meeting of the new council.
