Drug toxicity numbers for May show a decline in death rate

The Coroners Service has released the numbers for May 2026 of deaths due to drug toxicity.

The month of May saw 109 deaths, which is the lowest number since February of 2020, and equals about 3.5 deaths per day.

For 2026, the majority of deaths occurred in people aged between 30 and 59 (68 per cent) and were males (76 per cent).

Deaths for those between 19 and 59 has seen a significant decline since 2021.

Most drug related deaths were in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health regions.

Eighty-one per cent of drug death have taken place in residences, social and supportive housing, single-room occupancies, shelters while 18 per cent took place outside or in cars.
