The family of B.C. MLA Joan Phillip, Amshen, announced Friday afternoon that she has died.

Phillip was a longtime champion of Indigenous rights and a serving MLA whose advocacy and leadership left a lasting mark on British Columbia politics.

In a statement, her family said she was surrounded by “the love of her life,” Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, as well as her children, grandchildren, and other family members.

She was 74.

“Joan was a fearless warrior and inspirational leader, and we will miss her dearly,” the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) said in a statement. “The family asks for privacy at this time, and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.”

Phillip was a member of the Penticton Indian Band, part of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, and also spent time as the band’s manager of lands.

Premier David Eby also released a statement Friday, expressing his grief and that of the B.C. NDP caucus.

“Joan was an epic fighter who dedicated her life to making the world a better and fairer place,” Eby said. “We’ll miss her so much. Rest in peace, Joan.”
