South Surrey shooting leaves 1 critical, suspects arrested

One person has been hospitalized in a critical but stable condition after being shot in South Surrey late Tuesday night.

The Surrey Police Service says that just after 11:15 p.m., officers got reports of “several” shots fired along 33 Avenue near 152 Street.

The SPS says that when the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

“The members immediately rendered aid and Surrey Fire Services and BCEHS attended the scene and treated the man. He was subsequently transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition,” Sgt. Tige Pollock said in a statement early Wednesday.

“Shortly after the shooting, RCMP SPOSU Surrey Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) members located a suspect vehicle in the area. The suspects attempted to flee and subsequently were involved in a single motor vehicle collision,” Pollock added.

With the help of a police dog, the two suspects were arrested in the area, police say. They remain in custody.

Police say the RCMP SPOSU General Investigations Unit (GIU) and Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) are investigating the shooting.

Police have not confirmed whether they believe the shooting to be linked to the ongoing B.C. gang conflict.

Earlier Surrey shooting under investigation

Meanwhile, an earlier shooting by a police officer right by the border with Delta is being investigated.

Pollock says around 4:40 p.m., some RCMP SPOSU officers were in the area of 120 Street and 64 Avenue on an “unrelated investigation” when they had an “altercation with an unknown man after he allegedly attempted to steal from the officers.”

“During that altercation, a SPOSU member discharged their service firearm,” Pollock explained.

Police say no one was injured — neither police officers nor the suspect.

The man was arrested and remains in custody, Pollock says. The incident is now being investigated by the SPS’s Frontline Investigative Support Unit.

“An update will be provided when additional details are available.”
